DUBAI // A motorist was today fined Dh5,000 for insulting a fellow driver.

AA, a 21-year-old Emirati customs inspector, said he had been driving in Jebel Ali at about 4pm on October 3 when ND, a 34-year-old pilot from the US, drove up behind him and started honking his horn.

"I waved at him to wait until I took the exit," said the customs inspector, adding that the pilot then overtook him and stopped suddenly, forcing him to break. The pilot then got out of his Cadillac and walked towards the customs inspector's car.

"I rolled the window down and heard him insulting me and my friend," said the customs inspector.

The pilot said that he had been cut off by the customs inspector and that he honked his horn to ask him to move aside. When the customs inspector ignored him, he became upset.

"He waved his hand at me in dismissal," said the pilot. He said that when he approached the customs inspector he informed him his driving manner was dangerous.

The pilot denied using inappropriate language, but told the Dubai Misdemeanours Court he could not remember what he said.
