Mother, son stabbed officers during search, court rules

They and another son get three years for roles in burglary and resistance to police investigation.

DUBAI // A man was sentenced to three years in prison for theft while his mother was acquitted of hiding the stolen items – but convicted along with another son of stabbing officers searching their house.

Last summer, AA, 30, an Emirati, broke into the house of JA in Al Safa area using a screwdriver, then stole Dh170,000 worth of jewellery and Dh11,000 in cash.

On September 26, 2010, police went to AA's villa in Al Qarqaa because he had been involved with several other villa burglaries. But his mother, ZA, 57, and her son SA, 29, both Emiratis, attacked the officers. They were also sentenced to three years.

ZA stabbed a lieutenant, FA, twice in the arm, while SA stabbed him in the abdomen, records said.

She also stabbed AM, a captain, in the thigh while SA attempted to stab him in the neck before other officers restrained them, records show. SA, a soldier in the Armed Forces, was in uniform at the time.

Records said ZA's two other sons and two daughters also pushed officers trying to search the second floor down the stairs. Various family members also insulted the police.

RA, a police corporal, said that after the assault, they found large quantities of jewellery hidden in ZA's room under the bed.
