Mother, son charged in jewellery heist

About Dh170,000 worth of goods were stolen during a burglary last year, prosecutors say.

DUBAI // A man and his mother were charged with theft and possessing stolen items in the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance this morning.

According to prosecutors, the son, AA, a 30-year-old Emirati, broke into the house of JA in Al Safa using a screwdriver, then stole Dh170,000 worth of jewellery.

“I did it, but I didn't break into the villa,” he told the court.

JA testified he had left the country with his wife and children on July 30, and when they returned on August 10, they found the villa had been burglarised.

JA said they had to call a locksmith to open a safe in his bedroom because he couldn’t find its key. When it was opened with a drill, he discovered that all the jewellery inside, as well as Dh11,000 cash, were missing.

He and his wife then reported the theft to Bur Dubai police.

AA was arrested because he had been involved with several previous thefts and the stolen items were found in his family’s home where his mother hid them, prosecutors said.
The mother ZA, 57, an Emirati, was charged with hiding and possessing stolen items. She was not in court this morning.
The next hearing will be on May 1 to summon ZA.
