DUBAI // A mother killed herself and her baby son by jumping off a high-rise residential building after a marital row over an alleged affair, police said yesterday.

The deaths of the Indian mother, 27, and her 12-month-old child, who plunged 11 floors to their death on Tuesday morning, were described by police as an avoidable tragedy.

The incident, in Jumeirah Village Circle, was “100 per cent suicide”, said a spokesman for Dubai Police, who added that the woman’s husband was at work at the time.

The police spokesman told how the wife had accused her husband of having an affair, which led her to demand a divorce.

“What started out as something small escalated,” he said.

The row led to the husband agreeing that they would separate and then divorce in their home country of India.

However, after the husband had left for work, the mother jumped from the balcony with her child, the police spokesman said.

He added that the mother had left a letter for her family in India saying that she wanted a divorce.

Police described the deaths of the mother and baby as “a tragedy which should not have happened”.

“It should never have got to this extent,” the spokesman said.
