DUBAI // Two men who embezzled more than Dh4 million from a company owned by the Dubai Naturalization and Residency Department (DNRD), have been sentenced to ten years in prison each.

KM, 42, an Emirati who is a previous senior executive at one of DNRD's internal departments, and PE, 37, from India, were found guilty of abusing their powers as public employees and unlawfully obtaining US$722,000 and Euro450,000 between 2003 and 2007.

Prosecutors told the Criminal Court that the two manipulated business deals involving their company, which was established in 2003 to provide IT services to public departments in Dubai.

MM, 54, from Egypt, an expert at the Department of Expertise and Dispute Settlement, said he discovered the embezzlement in 2009 and notified police.

Prosecutors finished their investigations in 2011 and the two men appeared in court in May of that year when they denied all charges.

The court ordered both men to jointly repay the company US$722,000 and Euro450,000 in addition to compensation of Dh20,000.

The Indian will be deported after serving his prison term.
