Men tried to steal car bumper, prosecutors say

The car once belonged to one of the defendants, but had been repossessed, the court heard.

DUBAI // Two men are charged with attempting to steal the bumper of a 2003 Honda Civic, a Dubai court heard this morning.

The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance was told that the Emirati BE, 23, was caught on February 22 trying to detach the bumper of a Honda parked at a car workshop.

According to court records, BE drove to the workshop with his accomplice AJ, a 20-year-old Kenyan clerk, about 9pm.

AJ remained in the car while BE sneaked towards the Honda. Workers at the shop saw him, however, and caught him before he could get the bumper off.

He told them it belonged to AJ, who owned the car.

Workshop employees said the car had been repossessed by an insurance company parked there for more than a month.

Police were called and arrested both men. AJ was waiting in the car when he was arrested, records show.

A verdict will be announced on April 12.
