ABU DHABI // A man tried to kill himself by slashing his wrist with broken glass after finding the body of his 14-year-old girlfriend, who had fallen to her death from a balcony.
The Syrian man S, who is in his early 20s, found his compatriot’s body in a pool of blood on September 5 shortly after they exchanged text messages saying they would commit suicide.
He appeared at the Misdemeanours Court charged with having an illicit relationship.
While the pair had exchanged messages suggesting they would commit suicide, a legal source said the girl may have accidentally fallen after running to the window to see her lover.
“She sent him a message saying ‘I’m going to commit suicide’ and he replied jokingly ‘OK, I will join you after I go to the bathroom’. It was clear from the tone and slang phrases they used that they were not serious,” said a legal source.
Shortly after discovering the girl’s body, the man slashed his wrist. But he said he was not aware of what he was doing and when he realised, he called the emergency services.
In court yesterday, he admitted he had been in a relationship with the girl, but said their only contact was through their mobile phones. He was charged with “beautifying the sin” – a charge relating, in this case, to a forbidden romance. The case was adjourned until January 7.
