Man robbed three at knifepoint, Dubai court hears

Prosecutors told the Criminal Court that ZL, 35, from China, and another man jumped into the car on March 24 this year when its passengers stopped to visit the shop near their home in International City.

DUBAI // Two men jumped into a car parked next to a supermarket and robbed its passengers at knifepoint, a court heard this week.

Prosecutors told the Criminal Court that ZL, 35, from China, and another man jumped into the car on March 24 this year when its passengers stopped to visit the shop near their home in International City.

As one of the passengers stepped out of the vehicle the defendant and another man, who is still at large, pushed her back in and climbed into the vehicle themselves.

The defendant then pointed a knife at the passengers and hit one of them with its handle. He then searched the vehicle for money, finding Dh2,000. He then told the passengers to pay him money on a regular basis and threatened to kill them if they did not do so.

One of the robbers asked one of the female passengers for her mobile phone number and out of fear she complied.

The two robbers then got out of the car and drove off in their own vehicle.

The victims noted down the licence plate. When they returned home one of them received a call from the robbers demanding money so she reported them to police.

The police tracked the car through its licence plate and discovered it had been rented by ZL. They arrested him and found a knife fitting the description given by the victims.

He was not present in court to face charges of armed robbery, attempted armed robbery and issuing threats to kill.

The next hearing was scheduled for July 23.
