A salesman who stabbed his roommate after a lunchtime row has been told he must serve six months in prison.

The 23-year-old, from Sudan, was cutting vegetables in the kitchen of their shared residence in Naif, Dubai, when an argument broke out with the 52-year-old victim.

The attacker used the knife he was preparing his lunch with to stab his compatriot in the chest and the back, Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The injured party managed to flee the scene and alert emergency services.

He was taken to Rashid Hospital, where he received treatment for internal bleeding.

The incident took place on October 29, 2017.

The victim said his relationship with his roommate was already strained.

“We had argued before but, on the day of the incident, he had the knife in his hand and suddenly attacked me with it, stabbing me twice in the chest and in the back as I turned to escape,” he said.

A policeman who dealt with the case said the guilty party told him he had been provoked by the victim and the incident had escalated quickly.

The defendant was found guilty of attempted murder.

He was sentenced to six months in prison and fined Dh3,000.
