ABU DHABI // A man accused of smuggling 70 capsules of heroin into the country was cleared by the Criminal Court today.
AM, from Pakistan, was arrested after a CID agent found a heroin capsule inside his cupboard during an inspection of his labour camp last March.
Police claim that during interrogation the man confessed to swallowing 70 such capsules and smuggling them into the country in exchange for 200,000 Pakistani Rupees, paid to him by a man referred to as K.
They said that when he arrived in the UAE he gave the other 69 capsules to another man, H.
But in court the man withdrew his confession, claiming it was forced.
A medical exam found no evidence that the man had been tortured, but the court cleared him ruling that other than his confession there was no evidence to the drug smuggling charge.
