DUBAI // A member of an Indian “mafia” gang threatened to kill a Dubai businessman if he failed to pay Dh15 million to the head of the gang, a court was told today.

Prosecutors said A?T, 53, arranged to meet the Indian businessman B?A, 40, by pretending he was interested in a property deal.

But when the two met he told the businessman he was working for an Indian organised crime gang that operated in the Emirates.

“He told me he came to convey a message, which was if I did not pay him he would kill me,” said the businessman.

The court heard the gang member threatened the businessman several times, including in meetings where undercover police officers were present.

“I heard him warn the businessman of how dangerous this mafia gang was,” said R?A, 49, an Emirati police officer who was at some of the meetings.

“He was very proud that he was one of its members.”

The Criminal Court charged him with making threats to kill and blackmail.

He did not appear in court and the case was adjourned to December 5.
