DUBAI // A lovestruck Chinese cook has been fined for trying to kill himself after his girlfriend of only six weeks broke up with him and refused to return his gifts.
KD, 22, tried to jump off a fourth-floor balcony in Discovery Gardens after breaking up with his girlfriend, CQ, 19. He was stopped by a security guard.
The cook said his former girlfriend did not answer several calls and told him she had given away his gifts.
He told police he had even given her his ATM card so she could spend money on herself.
The girlfriend, a customer service worker at the Palace Hotel, said she met the cook about 45 days before the incident and admitted that they had been in a relationship.
The defendant arrived at her flat on May 8 and barged in without knocking to ask why she had broken up with him.
"I told him he was not the one and told him to leave me alone, but he kept trying," she said.
"When he came to my flat, he threatened to throw me and himself out of a window."
She said he tried to pull her towards the window but she managed to get away.
She called security guards but the cook ran off and was found on a balcony in the hallway, about to throw himself off.
"He was furious and resisted fiercely," said FA, 29, the Emirati head of security at the building.
The cook had denied the charge of attempted suicide at the Court of Misdemeanours. He was fined Dh1,000.
