Life in prison for Dubai's videotaping rapist

Prosecutors say assailant has a long history of sexual assault crimes.

DUBAI // A man who made a video of himself raping a 16-year-old boy has been sentenced to life in prison.

The 20-year-old Emirati defendant AM threatened Emirati student ZA with a knife before twisting his arm behind his back and throwing him to the ground to rape him - all the while taping the assault on his mobile phone, prosecutors said.

AM was sentenced to life in prison by the Dubai Criminal Court today, which is 25 years under UAE law.

ZA was on a football field with friends when he met AM, who arrived with a mutual friend, identified only as E.

When E and AM offered to give ZA a ride home, he accepted. But the men drove instead to AM's house. Once inside, ZA said, AM grabbed him by the neck and forced him to swallow a Tramadol tablet.

Two hours after giving him the drug, AM took ZA into a bedroom where he had set up a mobile phone on the table to record the incident. He threatened ZA with a knife, twisted his arm and threw him on the floor.

After finishing, AM ordered ZA to wash and told him he'd release the video if he ever told anyone what had happened.

ZA arrived home about 3am but his father would not allow him into the house, saying it was too late. After spending the night at a friend's house, he returned home the following afternoon.

His parents questioned him repeatedly about why he had returned home so late and ZA finally admitted to his mother what had happened.

She told the father who took him to Al Rashidiya Police Station.
