DUBAI // A man who stabbed his elder brother has been sentenced to one year in prison.

AH, 24, an Emirati, had been arguing with his sister when the elder brother NH, 30, intervened and punched him. The younger brother retaliated by stabbing his elder sibling, missing his heart by inches.

The sister grabbed the knife and called for an ambulance. The elder brother was taken to Rashid Hospital and the younger brother was arrested.

Prosecutors said the argument started at about 4.30am on November 18 last year, but did not say what started the argument.

The younger brother was charged with attempted murder, but he did not appear at his trial at the Criminal Court and was sentenced in absentia. In addition to the jail term he was fined Dh1,500.
