Inmate set fire to cell, self, court hears

He told police he was trying to commit suicide, according to prosecutors.

DUBAI // A 31-year-old man detained at the Qusais Police station faces charge after setting fire to his detention cell and his clothes, a Dubai court heard this morning.

ME, an Emirati, did not appear before the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance. He is accused of setting fire to the detention cell and his clothes, endangering police officers and other detainees, causing Dh1,650 in damage to public property and attempting suicide.
He had been held on drug charges before the fire.

According to records, the incident happened about midnight on October 15, 2010, when fire alarms rang in the police station. Officers rushed to the ME's cell and saw heavy smoke pouring from it.

AA, 28-year-old corporal at the station, said that the fire was in Ward D in ME’s cell. He said he used a fire extinguisher to put out ME’s clothes. He said ME, who is a smoker, used his lighter to start the fire in some boxes in the cell.

ME was taken to the Rashid Hospital.

AA told prosecutors that when he asked ME about his reasons, he told him that he wished to end his life.

“God forgive you, AA, why did you save me?” AA testified he was told.

The next hearing was scheduled for April 19.
