DUBAI // An illegal immigrant assaulted a police officer after being found with forged identity papers, a court heard yesterday.

The policeman RS, a 32-year-old Yemeni, told the Dubai Criminal Court that on November 17 he responded to a report that a man wanted for immigration transgressions was at a coffee shop.

"When I arrived and asked him for his ID he gave me a forged one," said RS. He said that he asked the man to follow him outside the shop, but when he turned around the man punched him in the neck and tried to flee.

OJ, a 35-year-old from Iraq, was charged with overstaying his visit visa, using a forged document, impersonating another person, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

He failed to appear before the court to enter a plea.

The next hearing is scheduled for May 6.
