DUBAI // A housemaid who claimed a friend put her up to steal Dh1 million from her sponsor's safe was sentenced to one year in jail followed by deportation.
KW, 30, from Ethiopia, said a compatriot told her to wait for her sponsor, ZS, to begin her exercise routine at 2pm on October 9 last year. She then stole the keys to the safe from the sponsor's purse and took a large amount of cash and jewellery from the safe before leaving the apartment to rendezvous with the friend, MM, and give him the loot.
KW told police that MM gave her about Dh200,000 and promised to buy her a house in Ethiopia. But the next morning, MM came to KW's apartment and took back the money, saying he needed it because he was going to Ethiopia. She said MM gave her Dh3,000 for her monthly needs. She was arrested shortly afterwards.
MM used the money to purchase two vehicles, but has been evading arrest since the crime was reported to police.
