House maid arrested at Dubai airport 'after stealing from sponsor'

The woman's Emirati sponsor called police after he returned home to find his safe open and empty

A house maid was arrested at Dubai International Airport attempting to flee the country after stealing almost Dh28,000 in cash and jewellery from her sponsor in Ajman, police said on Sunday.

Ajman Police’s Criminal Investigation Department said they arrested the woman who had stolen money, gold and electric devices with her.

The woman’s sponsor, an Emirati, reported her to police after he returned home to find the maid missing and his safe unlocked and empty, according to Maj Ahmed Al Nuaimi, deputy director of CID.

“He told us she opened the safe and stole Dh27,900 in cash, jewels, an iPad, and her passport before she ran away from the house,” he said.

Investigators discovered the woman, of Asian origin, had booked a plane ticket and tracked her to Dubai International Airport, where they found her waiting for her flight.

She was arrested in co-operation with Dubai police and admitted to stealing from her sponsor.

She was referred to the public prosecution for trial.
