DUBAI // Police have arrested two men suspected of trying to smuggle 1.1 kilograms of heroin out of the country.

Officers arrested them in a raid on their hotel room in Naif on March 15, after being tipped off that they were to smuggle the drugs in a suitcase to their home country, which was not identified,  in the Gulf.

M?Y, 32, a watchman, and M?K, 27, a clerk, were said to have been under the influence of heroin at the time of the arrest.

A spokesman for the anti-narcotics department yesterday said the men had come to Dubai to buy the heroin, which was in 106 capsules, after making a deal with a source in an unidentified Asian country.

He said the source put them in contact with a trafficker in Dubai, an illegal resident from an Asian country. Police said they were tracking him and hoped to arrest him soon.

It was unclear how the drugs, with an estimated street value of Dh100,000, were smuggled in.

Police said the two men confessed during interrogation that they intended to sell the capsules, with the help of a man in their country, after initially denying it.

“We have already informed the concerned authorities of the activity of the third suspect and they are carrying out their own investigations,” the spokesman said.

The case has been referred to the Public Prosecution.
