DUBAI // A man told a judge today that consuming hashish was "a big, big mistake".

JD, a 32-year-old British engineer, admitted possessing and consuming the drug and asked the Dubai Criminal Court to issue a sentence. If convicted, he faces at least four years in prison to be followed by deportation.

He was arrested in his car on February 14 by anti-narcotics officers acting on a tip-off.

"Upon his search nothing was found with him but he willingly said he possessed some hashish in his apartment," said MS, the 32-year-old officer who arrested him. He said the man took officers to his apartment in Dubai Marina and handed them four pieces of the drug.

"I'm very sorry, it was a big, big mistake," JD, told the presiding judge.

A verdict has not yet been issued.
