DUBAI // A Rashid Hospital security guard who twice molested a comatose patient was yesterday jailed for five years. The Emirati guard, identified as MI, 34, sexually assaulted the patient on two consecutive days in April this year, the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance found. The court was told that he had attempted to pass himself off first as the woman's brother and then as her husband when confronted by nurses and hospital staff.
Witnesses told prosecutors they had observed the defendant kissing the 22-year-old woman and touching her inappropriately. A Filipina nurse said MI went into the victim's room on the night of April 4 and asked her to leave. "When I left the room he locked the door," the nurse said. "I looked through the glass window and I saw him lay next to her in the hospital bed." The next day, the nurse found him next to the victim again, holding her hand.
Hospital security was told there was an unauthorised man in the female patients' section. One guard told prosecutors MI he faced fierce resistance when he confronted the defendant. "I went to check out the situation and I saw the suspect," he said. "When I got him out of the room he fought back and yelled, telling the nurses that he was the patient's husband." amustafa@thenational.ae
