Gang of four sentenced to Dubai jail for human trafficking
DUBAI // A gang of four who operated a human-trafficking ring in Dubai will serve several years in prison before being deported.
Three women - MA, 33, from Kyrgyzstan; PL, 41, from Uzbekistan; and JS, 28, from Russia - and a stateless man, AM, 22, were found guilty in Dubai Criminal Court of bringing women to Dubai to work in their brothel.
Their crimes were revealed by an Uzbeki woman, 19, who came to work for them after a former prostitute told her she would make up to US$500 (Dh1,830) a day.
"She said I had to pay a total of $10,000 to the gang who will provide me with the visa and airplane ticket," said the victim, who arrived in Dubai in April last year.
After she had worked for several months, she thought she had paid off her $10,000 debt to the gang but was told she owed another Dh35,000.
When she refused, she was kidnapped by the male defendant and beaten in the desert before being taken back to the brothel and locked up.
She waited until she was alone with her next client and begged him to let her make a call on his phone. She called a friend in Dubai who called police.
MA was sentenced to five years in prison, AM was sentenced to three and PL and JS two years each.
