Footballer Craig Moore fined for drinking alcohol

The former captain of the Australian national football team, Craig Moore, was fined Dh1,000 yesterday for illegal drinking.

DUBAI // The former captain of the Australian national football team, Craig Moore, was fined Dh1,000 yesterday for illegal drinking. The footballer paid the fine after a hearing at the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours.

Moore, 34, was arrested on September 15 after what police said was an argument with a taxi driver over a Dh50 fare. He was charged with consuming alcohol, non-payment of the fare, and insulting a public official and assaulting a public official, a police officer called to the incident.

Moore was released on bail two days later, according to the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The last three charges were dropped following a review of the case by the public prosecution on Monday, after the police officer and taxi driver withdrew their complaints. Moore, who owns a property in Dubai with his wife, was capped 52 times for the Australian national team, and retired from international football after the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

The former central defender spent most of his 16-year club career with the Scottish club Rangers, but also played two seasons with the English Premier League side Newcastle United.
