DUBAI // An Emirati was sentenced to two years in prison in the UK yesterday followed by immediate deportation, after causing a crash that killed a three-year-old boy.

Ahmed Aldubaili, 31, admitted causing death by dangerous driving in October 2010, while driving on the wrong side of the road, as well as causing death while driving a vehicle without insurance.

Henry Blacklock was killed instantly and his father, Martin, suffered several injuries including a damaged jaw, loss of hearing, three broken bones and short-term memory loss.

The child's family were in court yesterday to hear the verdict.

Sentencing at Cambridge Crown Court, Judge Anthony Bate said Aldubaili had made a "tragic and catastrophic mistake".

Aldubaili, a jockey, had been in the UK for a month studying to be a horse trainer when the incident took place.

He was driving a friend's Jaguar on the right-hand side, as he would in his native UAE, while the UK drives on the left, leading to the collision.

The UK Home Office will now decide whether he will be allowed to return to the country.
