Dubai woman's kidnapper jailed for three years

An unemployed man who kidnapped his 25-year-old compatriot is sentenced to three years in prison.

DUBAI // An unemployed man who kidnapped and molested a woman he met in a souq was today sentenced to three years in prison.

LA, a 25-year-old woman from Bangladesh, met AH, her 26-year-old compatriot, in the Gold Souq in Deira after going shopping with her friend on September 18. She ran out of money and did not know how to use the ATM machine, but the man offered to help her and the two exchanged phone numbers before she returned to her home in Jebel Ali.

Three days later she headed to Bur Dubai's bus station to meet a woman she owed money to, but the woman didn't show up. However, she saw the man at the station and he asked her out to lunch.

The woman then hailed a cab but the man surprised her by jumping into the front passenger's seat. "The taxi driver refused to drop AH off and then I started screaming," she said.

The woman cried so hard that she fainted and woke up to find herself locked in a room. She was left there until the following day when the man came in and asked to have sex with her, assaulting her when she refused. He also stole her golden necklace before taking her clothes off and molesting her. He threatened to kill her if she told anyone.

The woman's employer filed a missing person's report to the Jebel Ali Police station when she failed to show up to work for two days. Her friend told police about the man they had met while shopping and officers tracked him down.

The man will be deported after serving his prison term.
