DUBAI // The Appeals Court has upheld a one-year prison sentence for a tourist who forged a man's passport so he could shop on his credit card.
It also upheld the acquittal of his compatriot.
The Britons MA and AA were both charged with forging the passport then using a credit card under the name of its holder to purchase two Rolex hand watches worth Dh137,150 and jewellery worth Dh40,250. The men were arrested after AA walked into a shop on February 6 and said he wanted to sell some jewellery he claimed had been a gift to him from a friend. But the salesman became suspicious of the jewellery's origins and called police.
MA denied all involvement and was cleared, while AA, 33, was found guilty and sentenced to a year in prison by the Criminal Court. AA was also charged with embezzling the two watches and the jewellery, but was acquitted of this charge by the Criminal Court and this acquittal was upheld by the Appeals Court.
