Dubai suicide bid maid released from prison with readers' help

Maid who was in court for trying to commit suicide is freed after Dubai Courts waive her fine.

DUBAI // A maid who was fined Dh1,000 for trying to kill herself by standing in the middle of the road in a bid to knocked down by a car has been freed, according to court sources.

The maid told the Misdemeanours Court last week she decided to kill herself after her sponsor refused to pay her wages and threw her out of the house.

The court found the 24-year-old Ethiopian guilty on a charge of attempting suicide and fined her Dh1,000 - a sum she would have struggled to pay - but her story prompted several readers of The National to offer to pay her fine, and others to offer to raise donations to cover her lost salary.

"I was wondering if there is a contact for the maid who was fined for attempting suicide? Can we make her a donation?" read one email.

Another reader offered to help raise donations that would cover the three months' worth of salary her sponsor witheld.

The maid's story was read by almost 34,000 visitors to The National's website.
