A man who assaulted a police officer in a bid to escape arrest after a drugs raid at his home has been handed a three-year jail sentence.

Anti-narcotics officers carried out a swoop on the Emirati man's address in Bur Dubai on October 8 of last year after receiving information he was in possession of illegal substances.

They found drugs in his pocket - later found to be 49 grammes of heroin - and set about bringing him into custody for questioning.

“We found drugs in his pocket and before we took him into custody he asked to use the toilet,” said the officer at Dubai Criminal Court.

The accused tried to escape the property and officers gave chase.

“He was handcuffed but started kicking my colleague all over his body,” said the policeman.

The defendant, 31, was eventually subdued and arrested.

He was under the influence at the time he carried out the attack, the court heard.

He was found guilty of possessing and using drugs and assaulting a police officer.

He must also pay a Dh20,000 fine in addition to his prison sentence.
