DUBAI // A man who stole 200 golden rings worth Dh244,000 from a jewellery shop was today sentenced to three months in prison.

KF, a 29-year-old Romanian, entered the Ramallah Jewellery shop in Naif on July 1, 2007, and pretended to be looking for a ring.

He asked the shop's salesman, 27-year-old NK from India, to show him a box of rings, some of which had diamonds in them. When the salesman did so he pepper-sprayed him in the face, grabbed the box and ran.

The salesman tried to chase him, but could not keep up and called the police instead. An informant led police to two Romanians, AM and MS, who they arrested and charged with possessing stolen goods.

Both were sentenced to three months in jail, but KF escaped justice until this year. Records did not elaborate on how he was caught.
