DUBAI // The emirate's highest court has ordered a retrial for a man sentenced to death for killing his ex-boss over unpaid wages.
The Cassation Court ruled that the 35-year-old Indian driver NK should be granted a new trial at the Appeals Court, which previously upheld a verdict of the Criminal Court sentencing him to death for premeditated murder.
The man was charged after hitting his former boss and compatriot SR on the head repeatedly with a hammer before stabbing him 30 times all over his body and running away.
Prosecutors say the attack was motivated by a dispute over unpaid wage. But the man has always denied that his actions were premeditated, claiming he was merely defending himself during a fight.
The Chief Prosecutor Khalid Al Zarouni, the head of Bur Dubai Prosecution, asked for a capital punishment sentence during the man's trial at the Criminal Court. Judge Maher Salameh ordered the death penalty last April and this was upheld two months later by the Appeals Court.
A date for the new hearing was not set.
