DUBAI // A man who assaulted his wife has been sentenced to a month in prison by the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours.

AS, a 46-year-old Moroccan, was also fined Dh1,000 by the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours.

NM, a Briton, 44, testified that she married AS four years ago in Dubai but continued living in the UK and came to visit often.

NM said she gave her husband Dh182,000 and asked for the money back last May. She was unable to locate her husband and sought the help of his compatriot and business partner AM, 31. She told AM that AS was wanted by police for financial problems.

"We found him in Fareej Al Marar area," she said. When she and AM tried to keep AS until police arrived, the defendant assaulted them both.

"He kicked me in the chest so that I couldn't breathe at the time and for sometime after," she told prosecutors, denying allegations that he was defending himself against an assault she initiated.

AS then assaulted his partner and bit him on the face and chest, the wife said in records.

The defendant denied his wife's story about the money and the assault, and said AM started the altercation by choking him and hitting him with his fist because he tried to get his wife out of AM's car.

"I bit him in the face and chest in self defence," AS said during prosecution investigations.

A medical report confirmed bite marks on AM's right cheek, and bruising in his mouth and on his chest.
