A drunken tourist who chased a woman down a Dubai street before smashing a bottle over the head of a police officer has been handed a six-month jail term.
The 23-year-old, from Saudi Arabia, had been drinking at a hotel in Al Barsha before carrying out the attack.
He later said he couldn't recall the incident, which took place on August 26 of this year, due to the amount of alcohol he had consumed.
The European woman - whose age and nationality were not disclosed - contacted police to report her ordeal.
When police arrived they found two men were running after the defendant, one who turned out to be his father and the other a hotel security guard.
One of the officers was hit over the head with a bottle when he approached the defendant.
He was taken to Rashid Hospital for treatment.
Another police officer managed to restrain the man and take him into custody.
“He assaulted my colleague and insulted both of us using very strong language,” said the Emirati officer.
The defendant was found guilty of assault and insulting police officers.
He will be deported after serving his prison term.
