ABU DHABI // An elderly Emirati man has been accused of giving his personal information to a fraudster who forged a Presidential Affairs document granting him a piece of land, the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court has heard.
But the man, who stood as close to the bench as possible to hear what the judge was saying, claims he only found the document in his late brother's belongings.
"In the 70s my late brother asked me for those details," he told the court. "He said he would apply for me. Then he never mentioned anything about it to me again."
When the brother died in 2012, his family found the document between his belongings.
"We were thrilled about it that we had been granted a piece of land so we took it to the municipality," he said.
The defendant said he only discovered it was forged after prosecutors called for him.
A verdict will be announced next Monday.
