DUBAI // A driver was sentenced to death this morning for locking an acquaintance in a refrigerated truck, then killing him over a financial disagreement.

MS, 23, from Bangladesh, was convicted of premeditated murder.

The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance was told in February that MS convinced MY to meet to solve a dispute they were having. MY had paid MS Dh16,000 for a clerk job in Dubai, but instead found he had been hired as a construction worker, according to records.

The met in a deserted area, where MS beat MY and locked him inside the refrigerated truck for four hours as he drove Dubai-Al Ain Road.

Prosecutors said MS parked in front of a mosque, then went to the truck's cargo area, in which MY was still alive.

He then stabbed MY in his back and chest, and slit his throat.

He had told the court he did not intend to kill him.

"I remember that we beat up each other, but I can't remember what really happened after that because I was drunk," MS told the court.

A policeman testified that MS said after his arrest he had met MY on the night of the incident to give him money, but MY badmouthed him. MS kicked him, he told police.

"He fell unconscious and I thought he was dead, so I put him in the fridge," MS said in records.
