Couple at war end up in Dubai court

A married couple assaulted each over the wife's determination to continue her studies, a court heard last week.

DUBAI // A married couple assaulted each over the wife's determination to continue her studies, a court heard last week.

"I have told her several times that I don't want her to continue her university studies," said her husband MM, 32, from Iran.

The couple, married for eight years, had been squabbling since the wife started studying three years ago, but the husband said things came to a head on November 24 last year when she called him a "pimp".

The husband said he had been about to head to a function with his sister when his wife NH, 32, insulted him. He ignored her and sat with his sister to complain about his spouse.

"I then noticed that she was listening to us from behind the door," the husband said, adding that his wife then started to slap and punch him.

"I pushed her away and left the house with my sister."

The husband denied assault at the Misdemeanours Court, saying he returned home the next day to find she had left and taken their four-year-old son with her.

"She claimed I kicked her out of the house," he said.

The wife said her husband assaulted her, and their problems started because he was having an affair with a woman he invited back to their home.

The couple have been charged with mutual assault. A verdict is expected on April 30.
