Court hearings in Ajman will be held remotely from Sunday, as part of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Defendants will stand "e-Trials" using video conferencing programmes in an effort to reduce the number of people gathering in court and promote social distancing.
Brig Gen Mubarak Al Razi, director general of Ajman's penal and correctional establishments, said 200 e-Trials have already been held since the system was introduced in 2018.

At the time, the service was implemented to help speed up court proceedings.
"Virtual courtrooms facilitate and improve services for defendants, speed up the judicial process and maintains everyone's safety," Brig Gen Al Razi said on Thursday.

This week, Dubai Courts said it would suspend all hearings to combat the spread of Covid-19.

All judicial hearings in the Court of Cassation, the Court of Appeal and the Courts of First Instance held in public will be temporarily halted from Sunday, March 22 until Thursday, April 16, it said.

Hearings at the criminal court will continue to be held but only for cases with detained defendants.
