ABU DHABI // Five people jailed for embezzling Dh297 million from the electricity and water regulator appealed against their convictions yesterday.

The fund prosecutor Ayman Hanafi argued for harsher sentences, saying the amount embezzled was significant and had not been returned.

The Criminal Court of First Instance sentenced the principle embezzler, MGH, the former head of risk management at Adwea, to three years in prison. In addition she was ordered to pay the equivalent amount as a fine.

MI, a Jordanian, who was found guilty of forging a certificate to give MGH authority to settle contracts, was sentenced to three months in prison and deportation. The three others, Jordanian men AI and MMI, and an Egyptian man, TZ, who worked for the insurance companies from which MGH accepted bribes, were sentenced to six months in prison followed by deportation.

Prosecutors dismissed the defence and claimed the evidence proved their guilt.

The case was adjourned.
