Client or criminal? Dubai Court hears conflicting reports in spa robbery

A man who claims he was robbed at a spa during a leg massage was in on the robbery plan, prosecutors told the Dubai Criminal Court on Monday morning.

DUBAI // A man who claims he was robbed at a spa during a leg massage was in on the robbery plan, prosecutors told the Dubai Criminal Court this morning.

MA, 26, said he was suffering from a muscle spasm in his right leg on the morning of April 7 last year and headed to a spa in Naif for a therapeutic massage.

In the middle of his massage, MA said, when four men - all Bangladeshis aged between 22 and 27 - barged in and started tying everyone up with plastic cables.

"They tied our hands and legs," said MA, who was the only customer in the spa at the time.

The defendants then took money and mobile phones from the five women who were working at the spa, as well as Dh2,700 from MA.

One of the five workers, 27-year-old Chinese national LA, said the men took the Dh1,500 she had at the time as well as her mobile phone.

"They finished and hurried out of the spa but one of them lost his shoe as he was running away," said LA.

Her compatriot SA said they stole Dh300 from her and her mobile phone. YW said they stole Dh2,600 from her.

After the four defendants left the spa, one of the victims managed to untie herself and call police.

Police tracked the defendants down to Hor Al Anz area and arrested them. They found 11 stolen mobile phones in their possession.

During investigations, the four men said that they planned the robbery with MA, whose role was to go to the spa as a customer.

When interrogated, MA confessed to his role, said prosecutors.

All five defendants have denied the charges in court.

A verdict is expected on February 13.
