DUBAI // An man who cut off a compatriot's little finger will spend three years in prison for the assault, a Dubai court ruled today.

AA, an Emirati, was convicted of using a cleaver to cut off the finger of RM in April 2008. About 30 other people were involved in the attack, prosecutors said; three of AA's friends, KA and MJ, both Emiratis, and HR, an Indian, were sentenced to three months each for helping him.

They were also fined Dh2,000 each for damaging property.

RM, 25, testified that he went to AA's house in Al Manama area to solve a problem between a friend of his and another man who is a friend of AA, KA, MJ and HR.

He said he was shocked when about 30 men, most of them in masks, attacked him with swords and knives, then cut off his finger. He was left with a 15 per cent disability.

He testified that his attackers said his friend had insulted them and threatened to chop off his head if he didn't lead them to his friend.

After they mutilated him, RM called his brother, called police. His brother rushed to AA's house to rescue RM, and some of the men there damaged his vehicle, RM testified.
