Brothers convicted of assault, robbery

They and a third male posed as police officers to steal from a man on the street.

DUBAI // Two brothers who kidnapped, assaulted and robbed a man were sentenced this morning to a year in prison.

AJ, a driver, 20, and TJ, a student, 19, both from Pakistan, were convicted by the Criminal Court of First Instance. A third male, a juvenile, is being tried separately.

The three posed as public employees to AM, a 28-year-old worker, as he was walking from a supermarket back to his residence in Industrial Al Qouz area in October last year. They forced him into a car, then handcuffed him and assaulted him.

Prosecutors said that they stole AM's two mobile phones and Dh2,000.

AM testified that the three told him they were from the Criminal Investigation Department and asked for identification documents.

After they searched him and took his money, they threw him out of their car and drove away, but he memorised the plate number and called police, records show.

The brothers were arrested 30 minutes later and confessed.
