DUBAI // A British expatriate assaulted a man who was sexually harassing his friend's wife at a hotel nightclub, a court heard today.

ME, 46, punched his compatriot CD, 48, in the jaw after the man put his arm around the friend's wife, prosecutors told the Criminal Court. The blow was so hard it fractured his jaw and left him permanently unable to open his mouth fully.

The friend's wife noticed the man looking at her while she was standing in a nightclub in the Ramee Rose Hotel on September 17, 2011.

"I ignored his looks but shortly afterwards he came up from behind me and stuck his body to mine before stretching his arm around my left shoulder nearly touching my breast," recalled the wife, 45.

She said her husband asked the man to leave his wife alone but he refused and started shouting at him.

The couple's friend ME then stepped in and punched the man.

Despite treatment, CD is still unable to fully open his mouth and has difficulty eating and chewing properly. He was also left with a permanent sinus infection as a result of the fight.

In court CD denied a charge of sexual assault while ME denied a charge of physical assault.

The case was adjourned to April 22.
