Additional year in jail for Dubai man who slashed friend's throat

Man who drunkenly assaulted his friend with a knife has his jail term increased from one year to two by the Appeals Court.

DUBAI // A drunk man who slashed his friend's throat had his jail term doubled today.

P?A, 37, from Sri Lanka, smashed down the door of his compatriot's room before assaulting him with its splintered remains and cutting his throat with a knife.

He attacked F?N, 42, on July 1, 2011, after drinking alcohol at the friend's home in Al Quoz. The victim went to bed at 5.30am but was woken 15 minutes later by the door being smashed.

The victim's wife woke up and pleaded with the drunk man to stop but he told her he wanted to kill her spouse.

The men fought before the victim fled the house, naked. Three passing Arab men rushed to help and the police were called.

A medical report determined he was permanently disabled.

The attacker was found guilty of assault, consuming alcohol and making threats to kill.

His jail term was increased from one year to two at the Appeals Court, with a fine of Dh2,000 and a deportation order upheld.
