ABU DHABI // A judge chided an Emirati yesterday for paying for his wedding with a Dh300,000 bank loan that he had no way of paying back.
The Abu Dhabi appeals court judge told AA that a person should marry with what he can, rather than take out a loan just for a "big party".
The result, he said, was that "instead of living a happy life with your wife and children, you went to prison."
AA, who remains in jail over the debt, said he had already paid off around Dh100,000 of the loan to Mashreq Bank.
He said he had applied to the Ruler's Court to have the rest of the debt cleared, and had a new job lined up that would allow him to make the remaining payments.
The judge agreed to his bail on his father's passport, and adjourned the case until November 29.
