Abu Dhabi court hears police 'bribe' tape

ABU DHABI // An audio tape in which a traffic policeman allegedly negotiates a Dh1,000 bribe from an illegal taxi service at the airport was played to the Criminal Court today.

SM, from Oman, is accused of taking bribes from unauthorised taxis in return for allowing them to pick up passengers at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

The recording was taken by an undercover policeman posing as an unlicensed taxi driver. Prosecutors say the recording includes the traffic policeman offering to waive three months worth of fines in exchange for Dh1,000.

His defence lawyer argued he could not hear such an offer being made.

"But we heard it," said the prosecutor firmly, "and so did the court."

The judges agreed.

The tape will now be sent for a full transcription.

Prosecutor Hassan Al Hammadi said a second recording of the moment the traffic policeman was arrested would be ready for the next hearing.

The case was adjourned until May 26.
