DUBAI // Police have arrested a man they said tried to smuggle more than 3 kilograms of heroin in a stereo speaker through the UAE.

The Dubai Police anti-narcotics department made the arrest after a tip last week. SDA, from an unnamed African country, was caught at a shop in Baniyas Square, officials said.

He initially denied the charges, but confessed when confronted by police with documents and other evidence of his involvement, officials said.

He said he had received the package from another African man and hidden the drugs at a friend's office in the Al Naif district.

Two packets of heroin, weighing 3.247kg, were found in the speaker, which was hidden inside a box, police said.

Dubai Police have referred SDA to the public prosecution on charges he possessed narcotics and psychotropic substances.
