DUBAI // An immigration officer who issued more than 10,000 fake entry permits and embezzled more than Dh5 million has been sentenced to 10 years in jail and fined Dh10m.

A A, 38, from Oman, abused his position as a data entry clerk at the Department of Residency and Foreigners Affairs to create fake entry permits which he would sell to expatriates who had broken their visa conditions and wished to avoid being fined.

He issued the permits between January 1, 2001, and July 24, last year.

At a previous hearing, the officer denied charges of embezzlement and forgery claiming he was forced to sign a confession.

He will be deported after serving his prison term.

The verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days.
