DUBAI // A crooked corporal at Jebel Ali police station has been jailed for a year for helping himself to hundreds of pornographic disks.
The disks were discovered after MA, 23, was arrested for taking a Dh3,000 bribe to cancel a traffic fine, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.
He seized them from pornography dealers whom he arrested, but whose arrests he did not enter into police records.
On February 7 he stopped a car driven by a Pakistani national, SK, on Emirates Road. He told SK his car was leaking diesel on the road, and took his driving licence.
MA told the driver he faced a Dh10,000 fine, but that he would cancel it and return his licence if he handed over Dh3,000.
"He was in uniform when he stopped me," SK told the court.
But when SK's boss asked the traffic department about the fine he was told it did not exist. Police told SK to hand over the Dh3,000 bribe, and arrested MA as he was doing so.
When they searched MA's car they found two large bags containing 266 pornographic CDs.
AD, a police colleague, told the court that MA had taken the CDs from people he arrested. "He would take the CDs then release the men without referring them to the police station," said AD, 28.
MA admitted that since the start of 2010 he had issued bogus "fines" to more than 80 motorists, 70 of whom bribed him between Dh200 and Dh3,000 to "cancel" them.
The court ordered the confiscation of the disks.
As well as a year for the pornography, MA was sentenced to six months and fined Dh3,000 for the bribe.
