Pupils in the capital's state schools will receive ID cards with tracking chips that pinpoint their movement while travelling to and from school on buses.
The Abu Dhabi Education Council and Emirates Transport are rolling out the new system on 1,813 buses, and introducing 1,370 supervisors.
Text messages will be sent if there are issues such as delays.
Tracking will also help officials to better identify the required number of buses and routes they need for the shortest travel time.
