DUBAI // A restaurant chef is accused of injuring a man’s ear after defending a waitress whom the victim insulted, Dubai Criminal Court heard.

Lebanese TY, 23, is charged with assaulting AA, whose name and nationality were not available in court records, after AA insulted a waitress using inappropriate words on June 13 last year.

Prosecutors said TY caused his victim to have a 3 per cent permanent disability to the external part of his ear as a result of the attack.

Filipino MP, 28, told prosecutors that on the night of the incident, she was with AA in a lift when he insulted her.

“I headed to TY and informed him what had happened,” she said.

The defendant then went to AA in his room, where they had a heated argument that escalated into a fistfight, a witness said.

“I didnt understand what they were saying because it was in Arabic, but they were screaming then started fighting and punishing each other, following which AA started bleeding from the ear,” Chinese HA, 24, who was present in AA’s room, told the court.

Police were notified after AA discovered that he suffered the disability.

“I tried to reach a settlement, Your Honor, but the victim demanded I pay him money so he would drop charges,” TY told the judge.

A verdict is expected on February 10.
