ABU DHABI // The UAE is to bolster its clean energy credentials when it hosts a conference of leading nations to discuss the issue in the capital next year. The Clean Energy Ministerial, a meeting of industrialised nations including France, Germany, the UK, US and Japan, as well as rising powers such as Brazil, China and India, is to convene in Abu Dhabi after concluding its latest talks in Washington on Tuesday. The nations account for 70 per cent of the world's greenhouse gases.

Abu Dhabi's offer to host the talks has received the support of all 24 participating governments, it was announced yesterday. The exact date of next year's event has yet to be confirmed. The UAE's bid to be at the forefront of clean energy development will build on last month's preparatory meeting of the Ministerial in Abu Dhabi, as well as the Masdar project to develop the world's first carbon-free city.

"This offers the UAE an opportunity to further demonstrate our participation in the global pursuit to advance clean energy technology and policies," said Dr Anwar Gargash, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. @Email:vtodorova@thenational.ae
